Background summary
Cancer is a serious and potentially fatal illness. Scientific studies indicate
that in case of life threatening diseases good social support is of great
importance for the feeling of physical and emotional well being. However,
reactions from the environment intended to be helpful are not always perceived
as helpful by the patient. This indicates that in case of life threatening
diseases social support can be an important source of assistance. At the same
time there is little knowledge about what specific social reactions are
perceived as helpful or not helpfull. More knowledge about the factors that
play a part in the way social support is experienced makes it possible to bring
out groups of patients that are at risk for problems in adapting to cancer or
adequately using available social support.
Study objective
Identifying factors that are involved in the way social support is experienced
by the patient when confronted with cancer.
Study design
Non experimental study with quantitative data collection. Patients are seen
subacutely after diagnosis (4 - 6 weeks after diagnosis). There is one
follow-up 6 months after diagnosis.
Study burden and risks
The current study consists of a questionnaire research (5 questionnaires) and
is non-invasive. To prevent the study being unnessecary burdening for the
subjects, questionnaires have been chosen that are short and minimally
burdening. completing the questionnaires will take a maximum of one hour.
Completing the questionnaires takes place when the patient is in the hospital,
in combination with other (treatment)appointments. Thus, no extra appointments
have to be planned to fill out the questionnaires. This study doesn't contain
any notable mental heath risks. The study also doesn't interfere with the
current medical treatment.
