Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Relation between rejection and both aggressive and withdrawn behaviour. The
possible mediating role of paranoid anxiety in the relation between rejection
and aggression, and the possible mediating role of social anxiety in the
relation between rejection and withdrawn behaviour.
Secondary outcome
The relation between rejection sensitivity and withdrawn/aggressive behaviour.
The possible mediating role of personalitystructures (borderline, psychotic,
and/or neurotic) in the relation between rejection and aggressive/withdrawn
behaviour.
Background summary
Perceived rejection has been shown to be related to withdrawn and aggressive
behaviour. However, it is not yet clear wether rejection causes aggression, or
whether aggression causes rejection. The present study will focus on the path
from rejection to aggression. We will test how rejection may eventually result
in aggression (by studying forensic psychiatric patients and prisoners) as
opposed to withdrawn behaviour (by studying general psychiatric patients and
healthy controls). A possible mediator in the relation between rejection and
aggressive behaviour is paranoid anxiety. A possible mediator between rejection
and withdrawn behaviour is social anxiety.
Study objective
The main objective of this study is to test 1) whether rejection in (forensic)
psychiatric patients is related to aggression and/or withdrawn behaviour, and
2) Whether anxiety mediates the relation between rejection and withdrawn and
aggressive behaviour.
Study design
The study has a cross-sectional design. Participants will fill in
questionnaires.
Study burden and risks
Subjects have no immediate benefit by participating in this study other than
the monetary reward (15 euro). There are no risks involved in this study. The
only disadvantage is the time it takes to fill in the questionnaires.
