Background summary
In the Netherlands, interventions aimed at youths who have to be treated in the
emergency department of a hospital have not been developed yet, despite all
available data on the relation between alcohol and injuries/illness events.
International results of effective interventions regarding (excessive) alcohol
use offer possibilities for similar activities in the Netherlands. This
proposal describes a project for the development and examination of an
intervention aimed at youths who have to be treated at the emergency department
of a hospital as a result of excessive alcohol use.
Study objective
Aim of the study is to develop and test a brief intervention for adolescents
who have to be treated in the emergency department of a hospital due to
excessive alcohol use.
Study design
Screening of possible candidates is done by emergency room staff. Research
employees are present at the emergency department (ED) during weekends to hand
out questionnaires and obtain breath analyses from participants. Questionnaires
include items concerning attitude regarding alcohol and risky behaviour after
alcohol consumption. After filling in the questionnaire and co-operating with
the breath analyser, participants are randomized in a control group or
experimental group. Participants randomized in the experimental group will be
invited for a motivational interview 7-10 days after their visit to the
emergency department. Six months after visiting the ED, all participants
receive a follow-up questionnaire, which includes the same items as the first
questionnaire.
Intervention
A motivational interview (1,5 hours), performed by trained staff members of
Parnassia Medical Centre. In this interview, participants* individual alcohol
use and accompanying harmful consequences are discussed using the principles of
motivational interviewing.
Study burden and risks
Burden: motivational interview (1,5 hours)
Risks: no risks are associated with this intervention
