Background summary
Varying results are achieved by individual patients during participation in
cardiac rehabilitation (CR). Previous research studying the short and long term
effects of CR also show fluctuating results. Heterogeneity of the cardiac
patient population (e.g. differences in age, cardiac disease or health status)
could be a possible explanation for the fluctuating results. The purpose of
this research is to identify determinants that determine the success of
rehabilitation. Knowledge of these determinants can be used to optimize CR
programs.
Study objective
Primary objectives:
1) To identify determinants for short- (completion of CR) and long-term (1 year
after the start of CR) outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation
2) To determine whether results achieved during rehabilitation are predictive
for the long-term success of cardiac rehabilitation
Secondary Objective:
1) To determine the magnitude of both short- and long-term outcomes of the
Capri CR program
Study design
A prospective observational study among cardiac patients. All measurements will
be integrated in the Capri rehabilitation program and are performed on three
different occasions (testsessions):
1. Start of rehabilitation
2. Completion of rehabilitation
3. Follow-up, one year after the start of rehabilitation
Participation in this study does not affect the treatment of the cardiac
patients.
Study burden and risks
Some of the measurements are already performed as part of the rehabilitation
program. The first two testsessions will take approximately 40 minutes (extra)
time. The third testsession (follow-up) is added and will last 75 minutes. The
risks associated with participation in the Capri monitor are minimal.
Participation in the monitor has no direct benefit to the patient. However, if
a patient's results are outside the normal range for that test, a clinician
will be contacted. This clinician has the ability to adapt the treatment.
