Study objective
The primary aim of the study is to answer the following research question:
Does selfmanagement coaching by expert patients result in more perceived
control over diabetes and a better quality of life in newly diagnosed patients
with diabetes type 2?
Study design
In the experimental group patiets will be coached by an expert patient. A
self-efficiacy based selfmanagement program is used for this. This program is
directed to the two main components of selfmanagement in diabetes type 2:
nutrition and physical activity. Other kind of questions can also be posed to
the expert patients.
In the experimental group, patients are learned to integrate a healthy
lifestyle with their daily activities. Patients receive this training in
addition to the usual care of the general practitioner, diabetic nurse and
dietician.
Afterwards, the patient is allowed to contact the expert patient by telephone
or by e-mail with problems or questions.
Patients of the control groep receive care as usual by the general
practitioner, diabetic nurse and dietician.

3 months. A self-efficacy based self-management program is used to depart from
in this coaching. This program is directed to the two main components of
selfmanagement in diabetes type 2: nutrition and physical activity. Other kinds
of questions can also be posed to the expert patients.
