Background summary
Since 1983 a cohort of children born prematurely has been followed
(POPS-cohort) to study effects on health and behaviour and be able to offer
support is necessary. The POPS-cohort is unique because of the long term
follow-up (2,5,9,10-11,14 and 19 yearas of age) and the large amount of
available data.
The number of children borm preterm has increased over the years. Nowadays
between 13.000 and 16.000 children are born prematurely annually. Although
survival has decreased, morbidity has increased causing problems in later life.
The follow-up of the POPS-cohort has given us many new insights about the
consequences of preterm birth. De coordination of the POPS-cohort is done at
TNO, but the follow-up is realized in collaboration with many institutes. At 19
the POPS-participants appeared to have less often a job and a relation, were
less likely to show risk behaviour.
Study objective
The ex-prematures have reached the age of 27. How do they cope with the demands
and responsibilities of life compared to their peers. Did their health status
change? Did new problems arise? Did they get their degree and how does their
career develop? Do they need to use social insurance? Knowledge on long term
social and health effects of premature birth is necessary and will be used to
improve the support of ex-prematures and develop early interventions.
Study design
In this project TNO and AMC will ask the POPS-participant to fill out several
webbased questionnaire concerning life cours . The AMC already used thi life
course questionnaire in children with chronic diseases. About 500 POPS
participants gave their e-mailadress to obtain the POPS-19 magazine and
indicated they wanted to be posted on new follow-up studies. The
POPS-participants will be contacted through email. Controles are friends of the
POPS-participants with same age, gender, background.
