Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Part A Incidence: type and severity of injury.
Part B 2 years post-onset. Consequences for the child post-ABI (physical and
cognitive impairments, activity limitations) and participation restrictions of
the child/youth.
Secondary outcome
Part A Incidence: cause of injury. Hospital stay, diagnostic imaging, care
after discharge.
Part B 2 years post-onset. Consequences for parents, family and needs of health
care.
Potential determinants of functioning and participation post-ABI, such as type
and severity of injury, age, sexe, family- and environmental factors.
Background summary
Acquired brain injury (ABI) in children has long been neglected because the
incidence and consequences for patients, parents and family and society are not
well known. Insight is lacking in the influence of ABI on the development of
the child, and on the related need of health care. In addition, it is unknown
which factors might correlate to the level of functioning of a child with ABI.
Insight in these factors is relevant for adequate planning and innovation of
care.
Study objective
Objectives are:
A. to assess the incidence of ABI in children and youth (up to 25 years of
age).
B. to describe the consequences of ABI, restrictions in participation and
health care needs 2 years post-onset, as well as associated factors.
Study design
In part A of this cohort study the incidence of ABI in children and youth (till
25 years) is estimated according to patient records of the participating
hospitals in Rotterdam and The Hague.
In part B we assess the consequences and participation restrictions, and health
care needs.
The influence of child-, family- and environmental factors on these outcomes
will be explored.
Study burden and risks
Burden of the child/youth concerns a hospital visit for physical examination
and cognitive testing. At home an interview using questionnaires will be taken.
Total assessment time child: 150 minutes.
Interview and questionnaire for parents and family, total assessment time 130
minutes.
Assessments and interviews are non-invasive and without any risk.
