Primary outcome
incidence of vertebral fractures in geriatric patients
Secondary outcome
riskfactors associated with new vertebral fractures
Mortality of paients with and without vertebral fractures after three years.
Quality of life, and daily functioning of patients with and without new
vertebral fractures
Background summary
The prevalence of vertebral fractures among geriatric outpatients is fifty
percent. Vertebral fractures are associated with high morbidity and increased
mortality. Secundary prevention with bisphosphonates reduces the risk for a new
fracture with fifty percent.
Incidence rates of vertebral fractures in this specific population are not
available.
Study objective
To determine the incidence of vertebral fractures and exploring riscfactors in
the geriatric outpatients.
The effect of new vertebral fractures on daily activities, quality of life,
reported falls.
To explore the relation between frailty syndrome according to Fried (See
studyprotocol) and new vertebral fractures.
Study design
Prospective study on 303 patients who were enrolled in the former GOPOZ study
are asked to participate in this follow up study design.
Vertebral fractures will be scored on X rays of lateral chest and lateral
lumbosacral spine. These x-rays will be compared with those in 2007.
Backpain, quality of life, daily activities and falls will be asked out.
Walking and frailty syndrome will be measured.
Study burden and risks
Two hour contact on the geriatric outpatient ward of the Slotervaarthospital,
including questionnaires, laboratory testing and radiology.
No risks are associated with participation, other than the very low radiation
dose for an ordinary X-ray, and hematoma after the bloodtest.
