Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Main study parameters are self-reported intake of fruit, vegetables, high
energy snacks and total and saturated fat..
Secondary outcome
Secondary parameters are Body Mass Index (BMI, calculated from self-reported
height and weight), self-control skills and self-regulation skills.
Background summary
Despite decades of nationwide nutrition education programs and research
projects, unhealthy dietary patterns are still highly prevalent and
inequalities in these patterns according to socio-economic status (SES) do
still exist. Most of the existing nutrition education programs have tried to
modify behaviour just by motivating people to eat healthily, thereby omitting
to support people in actually making the desired changes.
We will develop and evaluate a computer-tailored nutrition education program
that goes beyond motivation only, by also addressing the volitional phase of
the behaviour change process. In one version of the program we will in
addition provide feedback on availability of healthy food options in the food
environment. Before newly developed nutrition education programs can be
implemented in practice it is important to establish the efficacy of the
program.
Study objective
The objective of this study is to evaluate the short (1 month) and long term (6
and 12 months) efficacy of two versions of the computer-tailored nutrition
education program in improving dietary intake patterns (i.e. (saturated) fat,
energy and fruit and vegetable intake), among adults.
Study design
The study will be performed as a three group randomised controlled trial (two
intervention groups and one control group). The first intervention group will
be exposed to the standard version of the computer-tailored nutrition education
program and the other intervention group to an extended version that also
includes feedback on availability of healthy food products in the food
environment. The control group will be referred to existing websites about
healthy eating.
Intervention
Two versions of a computer-tailored nutrition education program will be
evaluated. Both versions of the program aim to motivate and guide people to
adopt healthy dietary habits, by providing individualized feedback on current
dietary patterns and options for change. Participants will receive feedback on
their dietary behaviour, can set a goal for behaviour change and make an
action-plan that will support them in achieving and maintaining the goals. They
will also receive feedback on their progress in changing the behaviour. The
extended version of the program will in addition provide individually tailored
environmental feedback on availability of healthy food options in the local
supermarkets, restaurants and fast-food outlets.
Study burden and risks
Participation burden consists of the time needed to work through the
computer-tailored nutrition education program and to fill out questionnaires at
baseline and at 1, 6 and 12 months follow-up. Participants can withdraw from
the study at any time.
There are no risks associated with participation in this study.
