Background summary
Hearing loss is one of the most common conditions affecting people. In the
Netherlands, about 1.5 million people suffer from hearing loss. It means that
one in ten persons experience hearing difficulties. The consequences of hearing
impairment among older adults have been extensively studied. However,
relatively little is known about the effect of hearing impairment among younger
adults, aged 18 - 80 years. Do hearing impaired adults differ from normally
hearing peers in their participation at the labour market? Does hearing loss
affect work and income? Do hearing impaired younger adults experience more
feelings of loneliness compared to their normally hearing peers? To what extent
does the deterioration of hearing affect this relationship?
In order to be able to address those questions, the National Longitudinal Study
on Hearing (NL-SH) started in 2006. The study will be performed at the dept. of
ENT / Audiology of the VU University medical center.
We aim to continue the NL-SH by conducting a second measurement cycle. This
will allow us to investigate the course of hearing loss over a 5 year period in
relation to a range of conditions and variables. We will use and build on the
infrastructure of the existing NL-SH. A few validated questionnaires will be
added, because participants declared that they missed several themes in the
data collection.
Besides, we want to increase the number of participants so as to increase the
number in order to control for loss to follow-up. Currently, more than 1850
subjects are participating in our study. We want to expand this number to 4000
adults.
The above changes do not have any consequences for our participants.
Participants will be asked to fill in some extra questionnaires within the
second measurement cycle. The baseline questionnaire will be unchanged and will
be submitted to the new participants.
Study objective
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between hearing impairment
and various aspects of live, such as work, psychosocial health, quality of life
and use of health care. The results will yield more insight into the role of
hearing loss in various domains. Such information is required to adequately
develop and organize policy and health care.

Study burden and risks
De burden of the participants will comprise the performance of the Dutch
National Hearing Screening test over the Internet and the completion of various
questionnaires focusing on work, psychosocial health, quality of life and use
of health care. Once in two years, the participants will be requested to
complete some questionnares. Completing the questionnaires will take about 1,5
hours.
