Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The main parameters are the amount and severity of the problems in social
functioning, thought problems and co-morbid problems, and the measures of the
underlying processes: 1. visual perception; fixation pattern and fixation
duration, 2. autonomic reactivity; heart rate and skin conductance, and 3.
dermatoglyphic traits; hand scans which will be assessed in patients, their
parents/caregivers and in controls. For the thrid goal self-esteem, worries
about the future and experiences during puberty will be used as outcome
variables.
Secondary outcome
Not applicable.
Background summary
Only few studies have followed children with a pervasive developmental disorder
longitudinally, very few contained children with PDD-NOS and none followed the
developmental trajectory of children with MCDD. Besides this, little is known
about the underlying deficits, which cause problems in social functioning.
Puberty is also a topic of which little is know in adolescents with autism
spectrum disorders. This study will explore these underlying processes to
better understand and help adolescents with problems in social functioning.
Study objective
The objective of this study is threefold. The first objective of the study is
to determine the course of pervasive developmental disorders (more specific
PDD-NOS) and thought problems (more specific MCDD). Secondly, possible
processes underlying social problems in adolescents with PDD are explored
(visual perception, autonomic reactiviety and dermatoglyphic traits). Thirdly,
the puberty development and related problems in adolescents with PDD-NOS will
be studied as well as possible predictors of difficulties in puberty.
Study design
The current study is a longitudinal follow-up study of 246 adolescents who
previously showed problems in social functioning and/or thought problems (at
age six to twelve), and who will now undergo a re-evaluation of their problems
in social functioning, thought problems and co-morbid problems (at age twelve
to eighteen). Also they will be assessed as to how their pubertal development
is going. In approximately 300 adolescents from the general population the
puberty development will also be assessed. During this follow-up, we will also
assess measures of the putatively underlying processes of problems in social
functioning (i.e. visual perception, autonomic reactivity, dermatoglyphic
traits) in 100 individuals with PDD (random sample of 139 children diagnosed
with PDD during the first wave), in 50 individuals with other psychiatric
diagnoses, and in 60 individuals from the general population.
Study burden and risks
The risks of this study are negligible and the burden will be kept as minimal
as possible. Parents/caretakers and adolescents will be invited once to the
outpatient centre of child and adolescent psychiatry, Erasmus MC -Sophia in
Rotterdam. This visit will have a maximum duration of three hours. Beside this,
parents/caregivers will receive a set of (screening) questionnaires by mail,
and a two-hour interview by phone.
