Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Study variables included in the oral health assessment are: the number of
teeth, the presence of a removable denture, the number of occluding pairs of
teeth, caries, restorations, periodontal disease, and soft tissue lesions.
Te questionnaire contains questions on oral self care, dental visits, and
subjective oral health experience. In the research group, the severity of
Parkinson's disease will be registered using the Hoenh and Yahr index.
Secondary outcome
N.v.t.
Background summary
Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder. Due to the lack of the
neurotransmitter dopamine, muscles can not be controlled adequately and
movements are impaired.
Parkinson's disease is an age-specific disease because it generally occurs
after 50 years of age. The type and seriousness of symptoms and the progression
of the disease vary considerably among patients.
Patients may call upon care by a neurologist, a speech therapist, an
occupational therapist, a psychologist, a Parkinson nurse, and a physical
therapist, often collaborating in the so-called ParkinsonNet.
So far, the oral health of Parkinson's disease patients did not receive much
attention. The literature provides no oral health data of Dutch Parkinson's
disease patients and only a few international publications are dealing with
this subject. Probably, the oral health of persons suffering from Parkinson's
disease is worse than the oral health of comparable healthy persons. Oral
health self care may be impaired by Parkinson's disease symptoms, such as
rigidity and tremor.
Adequate oral health is important in order to prevent or at least minimize oral
pain, infections and functional problems.
Study objective
The objective of this study is to provide a reliable overview of the oral
health of Parkinson's disease patients in the Netherlands.
Study design
This study has a case-control design. The oral health of Parkinson's disease
patients will be compared to the oral health of a similar control group not
having Parkinson's disease.
Study burden and risks
There is no medical risk for the study participants. The oral health assessment
and completing the questionnaire take on average only 20 minutes of time.
