Background summary
Little is known about the prognosis and treament in young stroke patients. In
up to 40% of the patients etiology of stroke is unclear. Furthermore
information on prognosis (in terms of new vascular event and functional outcome
and quality of life) is based on small retrospective studies, which makes it
hard to give evidence based information. Furthermore information on treatment
in this young stroke group is extrapolated from studies in elderly stroke
patients, in which those young stroke patients were excluded.
Study objective
To investigate the risk of deeath and incident (cardio)vascular disease in
patients with a TIA or stroke aged 18-50 years
To investigate the riks of cognitive impairment and (vascular) dementia in
patients with a TIA or stroke aged 18-50 years
To investigate the influence of TIA or stroke on quality of life, depressive
symptoms and funcitonal outcome in patients aged 18-50 years
To investigate the risk of post-stroke seizures in patients with a TIA or
stroke aged 18-50 years
Study design
multicentre prospective cohort study
Study burden and risks
Patients will be contacted by phone every 6 months and will undergo
standardized, structured questionnaires on incident events, seizures and
cognition.
Furthermore at baseline all patients will undergo a questionnaire on their
medical history and medication and a blood sample will be taken.
In addition all patients will twice undergo a cognitive screening at 3 months
and 3 years after stroke.
The healthy subjects will only once undergo a cognitive screening.
