Background summary
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is an often occurring incapacitating disorder
that has a great socioeconomic impact. CFS belongs to the group of medical
unexplained symptoms, which means that the causes and underlying mechanisms are
unknown. CFS has an overlapping in the symptoms with another unexplained
symptoms* disorder, the fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). In FMS, we recently found
a disturbance in the muscle membrane function. In FMS, the muscle conduction
velocity is increased.
Study objective
To investigate whether the CVS patients show the muscle membrane disturbances,
as the FMS patients do. That is, are there muscle conduction velocities
disturbances in the CVS patients?
Study design
Observational study; three groups are being investigated: CFS-group, FMS-group
and a healthy control group.
Study burden and risks
The participants are visiting the institute twice; a total duration of the
visits is about four hours. The person undergoes a short physical examination
and non-invasive measurements are performed on the arm. The person completes
questionnaires. The burden is low and there are no risks associated with
participation.
