The first goal of this research is to translate the IMI-SR into a valid and reliable Dutch version of this questionnaire (N-IMI-SR). The second objective is to assess whether there is an association between IM and cognition in schizophrenia.

Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Primary hypothesis
The researchers will translate the IMI-SR into Dutch. Then a native speaker
will translate it back into English, and both the back-translated English
version of the IMI-SR and the original English version will be compared.
Reliability and validity of the N-IMI-SR: Internal (item-)consistency,
test-retest reliability, convergent and divergent validity.
Convergent validity: Performance Motivation Test (PMT).
Divergent validity: Symptom Checklist 90 Revised (SCL-90-R).
Secondary hypothesis
The correlation between motivation and cognition is determined
Motivation measures
- N-IMI-SR
Cognition measures:
- Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale IV (WAIS-IV), measuring intelligence.
- Winsconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), measuring executive functioning,
planning and organizing abilities.
- Trail Making Test (TMT), measuring attention.
Secondary outcome
not applicable
Background summary
Rationale:
This study focuses on two symptoms in schizophrenia: cognitive and motivational
impairments (intrinsic). Cognitive impairments include deficits in language,
(working) memory , attention, planning and organization. Motivational
impairments are a part of the negative symptoms. Motivation encourages behavior
towards a goal and determines how long a person can maintain this behavior.
Motivation can be distinguished between extrinsic motivation (EM) and intrinsic
motivation (IM). Intrinsic motivation is the motivation to act with the
expectation that it is inherently rewarding, such as pleasure.
Although impairments in motivation, cognition, and psychosocial functioning in
schizophrenia are prominent and cognitive impairments in schizophrenia
contribute to motivational constraints and vice versa, little is known about
their relationships within this population. Recent studies of the interaction
between IM and cognition were limited by the use of a measure (questionnaire)
which is not or not entirely designed for the measurement of IM, let alone for
the measurement of IM in schizophrenia. Therefore, further research into the
relationship between IM and cognition in schizophrenia is a matter of urgent
consideration.
Primary hypothesis
The Dutch version of the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory for Schizophrenia
Research (IMI-SR) (N-IMI-SR) is valid and reliable.
Secondary hypothesis
In schizophrenia, there is a positive relationship between IM and cognition.
Study objective
The first goal of this research is to translate the IMI-SR into a valid and
reliable Dutch version of this questionnaire (N-IMI-SR).
The second objective is to assess whether there is an association between IM
and cognition in schizophrenia.
Study design
There are two measurement points (T0 and T1).
Primary Hypothesis
Quantitative research in one-group design. Measurement to internal
(item-)consistency and convergent and divergent validity, repeated measurement
for test-retest reliability.
Secondary Hypothesis
Correlational research in one-group design. Measurement of the association
between motivation and cognition in a sample of patients with schizophrenia.
Study burden and risks
The burden per patient consists of completing psychological tests en
questionnaires considering cognitive functioning and motivation during about
192 minutes spread over two waves. Later on testresults will be briefly
discussed with the patient, this will take bout 10 minutes,
There are no risks.
