Background summary
Comorbidity is very common in people with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD),
particularly anxiety and depression. In neurotypical people those disorders are
usually treated with cognitive behaviour therapy.
Besides the behavioural level, ASD can be described on a cognitive level. There
are three leading cognitive theories about ASD. Cognitive limitations of ASD
are described with respect to theory of mind, weak central coherence and
deficits in executive functioning. It is very likely that these features will
influence the effectiveness of cognitive therapy.
Several studies show a relationship between cognitive coping strategies and
depression and anxiety disorders in neurotypical adults. In current reseach we
wil study this relationship in adults with ASD.

Study burden and risks
The respondents are adults with ASD. They are diagnosed using at least a DSM
IV-interview and a parent and the respondent were interviewed to gather
developmental information.
This study will take the resondents 15 to 20 minutes. Three questionaires are
used: the CERQ, a questionaire to measure anxiety and depression and a
live-event questionaire. Reseach with these questionaires never showed any sign
of risk for the respondent.
