Background summary
Spectral Domain * Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) provides images of
structures such as the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). However, conventional
SD-OCT diagnostics of glaucoma, a condition affecting the RNFL, is relatively
susceptible to artefacts. Therefore, another approach, less prone to artefacts,
was developed, i.e. by means of the attenuation coefficient (AC). The AC is a
quantitative, objective measure for the scattering and absorption properties of
tissue. Recently, we have shown that the AC of the RNFL decreases with the
severity of glaucoma. It is expected that the AC may also serve for better
detection of RNFL damage caused by various other diseases.
Study objective
To study AC changes of the RNFL in neuro-ophthalmic diseases.
Study design
Prospective, observational, well-defined case series.
Study burden and risks
Risks are negligible, inconvenience is minimal. Participants do not benefit.
Exclusively study-related visits: ON or NAION, 2; pituitary tumor, 5. A study
visit lasts approximately two hours.
