Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The primary study parameters are the spatial (distance-related) and temporal
(time-related) gait parameters, measured with the GAITRite during walking at
comfortable speed with and without a dual task, and at maximal speed.
Secondary outcome
The secundary study parameters are the number of falls that the participant
experienced during the three months after the measuremetns, physical fitness
levels, anxiety regarding falls, and a number of personal characteristics.
Background summary
In the general population, gait abnormalities are an important risk factor for
negative health outcomes such as, falling, immobility, disability, morbidity,
and mortality. Gait is considered a marker of global health. In clinical
practice, gait abnormalities are commonly seen in people with intellectual
disabilities. A high incidence of falls is also seen in people with
intellectual disabilities. However, little is known about the gait
characteristics of people with intellectual disabilities, and the relationship
between these characteristics and falls.
Study objective
The objective is to assess the gait characteristics of adults with intellectual
disabilities by other causes than Down syndrome, and without diagnosed
neurological conditions (Parkinson's disease, cerebrovascular accident,
dementia, and cerebral palsy), and the relation between these gait
characteristics and falls, physical fitness, and attention.
Study design
This is a cross-sectional, non-invasive study.
Study burden and risks
The study population has specific characteristics. Therefore the objective can
only be assessed by conducting the study in this population. Participation in
this study brings along negligible risks. The measurements require little
effort and are conducted and supervised by professionals who have experience
with this study populations and can assure safety.
