Background summary
Psoriasis is an auto-immune skin disease in which pro-inflammatory protein
mediators, released by skin cells and infiltrating cells, cause an abnormal
cell division and differentiation. It may be possible to treat psoriasis using
drugs aimed at preventing the synthesis of such mediators.
Study objective
The specific aim of the project is to determine the efficacy of Spherical
Nucleic Acids (SNAs) on psoriasis skin biopsy gene expression in vitro.
Study design
The 3mm diameter lesional skin biopsies will be treated with the test
preparations in vitro and epidermal RNA isolated. Analysis of the RNA will
allow the company to see if their preparation down-regulates expression of
pro-inflammatory genes involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.
Study burden and risks
The health risks associated with this research are small, possibly slight scar
formation at biopsy sites. The healed sites may be psoriasis free.
