Background summary
NEMESIS-2 (Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study-2)
It is already more than 10 years ago that a first study NEMESIS was done, in
which the psychiatric health was measured among a sample of 7000 respondents
from the general Dutch population.
Study objective
Actualize, replicate and extend the data of NEMESIS-1 with regard to the
prevalence, incidence, course and consequences (functioning, mental health care
use and costs) of psychiatric disorders among the general population of the
Netherlands.
Extension of the study: In extension to the goals of NEMESIS-1, attention will
be paid to the following issues:
• Externalizing problem behavior, especially conduct disorder, antisocial
personality disorder and ADHD among adults.
• Service use demand among persons with psychiatic problems and addiction,
especially the connecting with attitudes towards mental health care.
Study design
Data gathering in a sample representative for the general population will be
done on the basis of a multistage stratified random sampling design consiting
of about 7000 respondents 18-65 years old at baseline. Respondents will be
interviewed 3 times in 6 years with the CIDI.
Study burden and risks
The burden of the study is especially related to the time the interview takes.
To get insight into the mental health state of the population, an extensive
interview is necessary (the CIDI).
In NEMESIS-1, only 2,7% of the respondenten found the interview quite
distressing (De Graaf et al. Negative and postive participant responses to the
Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric
Epidemiology 2004; 39: 521-527.) Furthermore, a small proportion of the
respondents reported positive effects (participation had helped them coping
better with problems: 5,7%; and take the decision more easliy to seek help:
3,4%). Thus, most of the respondents of NEMESIS-1 reported neither negative nor
positive effects.
The CIDI is now used worldwide in epidemiological studies about psychiatric
disorders in the general population, among others in The World Mental Health
Survey Initiative.
