The primary objective of this pilot study is to assess the agreement between clinical fall risk assessments and fall risk based on mobility in daily life measured using the Senior Mobility Monitor (SMM).

Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Main study parameters are fall risk measures assessed in the hospital at
baseline and week 6 as a proxy measure for falls (questionnaires, physical
performance tests) as well as mobility in daily life measured for 6 weeks
continuously using the SMM.
Secondary outcome
Analyze individual items from clinical fall risk assessments such as dizziness,
previous falls and pain were solitary endpoints are correlated with SMM output.
Background summary
Falling is a severe risk in elderly adults, especially after a stay in the
hospital. Mobility impairment is one of the most important risk factor and
might also one of the easiest to improve. Current fall risk assessment is most
likely applied at one moment in time (one-off assessments). Continuous
monitoring of fall risk might enable the possibility to detect when an elderly
person becomes increasingly prone to a fall. With this information it is
possible to implement preventive measures, in order to limit the risks.
Study objective
The primary objective of this pilot study is to assess the agreement between
clinical fall risk assessments and fall risk based on mobility in daily life
measured using the Senior Mobility Monitor (SMM).
Study design
The design of this pilot study is a observational study and will be conducted
in collaboration with the Catharina Hospital, Eindhoven.
Study burden and risks
The risks associated to the fall risk assessments are negligible. Although
there is no direct health benefit for the participant, future patients may
benefit from continuous fall risk monitoring by timely intervention and thereby
reduced fall injuries, disability and loss of independency of the elderly as
well as health care costs for the society.
