Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The main outcome is the measures of peripheral visual field.
Secondary outcome
Additional parameters are visual acuity, ocular axial length and refraction
measurements.
Background summary
In the recent years, different studies have shown the importance of the
peripheral characteristics of the eye. These studies show a close link between
peripheral refraction and shape of the retina and suggest that differences in
peripheral refraction might trigger changes in the retinal shape. Whether
peripheral refraction is related to the quality of peripheral vision has never
been examined. Also the effect of adjusted peripheral refraction (also
'peripheral defocus') resulting from corrective lenses, on patient*s peripheral
vision, is unknown.
Study objective
To measure the quality of peripheral visual field in healthy volunteers and the
effect of different corrective lenses on the peripheral visual field.
Study design
Cross-sectional study
Study burden and risks
After informed consent, participants will undergo non-invasive measurements
during a single 30 minutes visit. Participants of group 3 will be asked to
return for a second exam after the clear lens extraction surgery for a repeated
peripheral visual field and refraction measurement (20 min). There are no risks
for subjects associated with participation in this study.
