Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The plaque score can be regarded as a continuously distributed variable. A
disclosing solution is painting on the tooth surfaces. The plaque score is
calculated by dividing the number of plaque containing approximal surfaces by
the total number of available approximal surfaces
Plaque scores are noticed before and after the intervention of both interdental
cleaning devices.
Secondary outcome

Background summary
Plaque removal is important to prevent dental diseases like gingivitis and
cariës. Bacteria also manifestate in between teeth. For that reason clean
devices like interdental brushes are highly recommended. Philips claims that
the latest the Sonicare AirFloss can replace the already excisting interdental
devices like floss and interdental brushes. This innovation is based on a
technology with a high-velocity burst of air and water droplets to clean the
interdental spaces.
Nevertheless no studies can be found where the plaqueremoval effect of the
Sonicare AirFloss is compared to the gold standard interdental brushes.
Study objective
The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of Sonicare AirFloss on
interproximal plaque compared to interdental brushes.
Study design
A randomized controlled split-mouth clinical trial
Intervention
The Sonicare AirFloss is an interproximal cleaning device. It is based on a
technology with a high-velocity burst of air and water droplets to clean the
interdental spaces. In this study the plaqueremoval effect of the Sonicare
AirFloss is compared to interdental brushes.
