Primary outcome
The study*s main endpoints are the skin-warming response of the child to
parents* sad faces, and the child*s generosity in warm (vs. cold) conditions
(with several predictors, such as attachment of the parents, skin-warming of
the parents to the child, etc.).

Background summary
The line of research we propose here thus seeks to address how some children
build dependable associations through thermal cues (i.e., securely attached),
whereas others do not (i.e., insecurely attached). This research is based on a
recent line of research by the PI that shows that warm cues are related to
relationship cognitions. The prediction is that contingent skin-warming
responding of the parent(s) leads to secure attachment for the infant at a
later age, and that this secure attachment is best predicted by the infant*s
own skin-warming responding.
Study objective
The primary objective is to study attachment in young children through
skin-warming.
Study design
The first part of the proposed project is a prospective longitudinal study in
which a sample of young parents will be followed (from the child*s birth until
it is 6 months old). This longitudinal study is complemented by several
within-participant studies, which will use the longitudinal study*s
measurements as continuous predictors.

This study involves minimal risk.

- Mother is a first time mother
- Age between 25-45
- Mother is planning to breastfed
- Native Dutch
- Mothers do not suffer from depression
