Background summary
Multiproblem young adults (between ages 18 and 27), characterized by severe
psychosocial problems, comprise a societal challenge with high priority on the
political agenda, both nationally and internationally. However, so far the
characteristics of multiproblem young adults have rarely been studied in
general, and have not been studied in an integrative researchproject combining
biological, psychological and social factors. In addition, the effects of
interventions for this group is largely unknown. Therefore, in-depth
multidisciplinary research investigating the (neurobiological) characteristics,
the service use trajectories, and the effects of intervention in this
population is urgently warranted. When combining the knowledge gained in these
studies, it will be possible to examine risk profiles of multiproblem young
adults, based on (socio)demographic, psychosocial, (neuro)biological
characteristics, and service use trajectories in order to explore who will and
who will not benefit from an intervention. Such studies pave the way to develop
more specific and cost effective interventions for this vulnerable group.
Study objective
With this integrative research project we will expand the knowledge on factors
associated with problematic behavior in young adults. To elucidate why
multiproblematic behavior in young adults exists in a persistent way we will
explore the underlying socio-demographic, psychosocial and
neurobiological/-cognitive mechanisms of their multiproblematic behavior and
their histories of service use. Furthermore, we aim to study the effect of a
multimodal day treatment program for young adults in a large urban city
(Rotterdam, the Netherlands) and individual characteristics that are associated
with treatment outcome.
Study design
In close collaboration with a municipal facility for adolescents and young
adults (*Het Jongerenloket* (JOLO)), several addiction, forensic and
rehabilitation programs in Rotterdam and "De Nieuwe Kans" (day treatment for
multiproblem young adults), we aim to study a cohort of 700 multiproblem young
adults for a period of three years, applying questionnaires, qualitative
interviews, neuroimaging and psychophysiological measures. A randomized control
trial design will be used for the effect study.
