Outcome measures
Primary outcome
- Seroprevalence of TBEV IgG-antibodies among Employees of nature management
organisations in the Netherlands.
Through the questionnaire, the seroprevalence will be adjusted for previous
exposure to TBEV abroad and vaccinations that can cross-react in TBEV-serology.
- Risk factors for exposure (e.g. location, tick bites) associated with
presence of TBEV antibodies.
Secondary outcome
For this part is no funding available yet.
- Seroprevalence and risk factors for exposure to other possible occupational
(e.g. other tick-borne) infections.
- Seroprevalence of TBEV IgG-antibodies among the general population of the
Netherlands (using available sera and questionnaire data from Pienter 2 or 3).
Background summary
Shortly after detection of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in the national
park "Sallandse Heuvelrug" in the Netherlands, the first two human autochtonous
patients with TBE in the Netherlands have been observed in june 2016. The risk
of exposure to TBEV in the Netherlands is probably very low, although unknown.
Furthermore, the majority of TBEV-exposed people do not develop severe clinical
symptoms. To assess human exposure to TBEV in the Netherlands, we chose to
determine the seroprevalence of TBEV IgG-antibodies among persons with an
occupationally high risk of tick bites in the Netherlands.
Study objective
Assessment of human exposure to TBEV in the Netherlands, through serological
testing of persons with an occupationally high risk of tick bites in the
Netherlands.
Study design
Observational cross-sectional study, using serological testing for TBEV
IgG-antibodies and an online questionnaire.
Study burden and risks
Participation consists of an (online) questionnaire and a blood sample. The
risks are negligible, as only one blood sample (venipuncture) is taken, carried
out by trained staff with experience in taking blood, at a local facility for
venipunctures.
