Primary outcome
6 days of smartphone-based assessment, randomly distributed over the day in 10
time-slots (8:00 till 20:00), preceded and followed by several regular
questionnaires.
Secondary outcome
Not applicable.
Background summary
Evidence is growing that religion and spirituality (R/S) have a protective
effect on suicide and suicidality. Nevertheless, it is not clear what accounts
for this effect. The longitudinal research needed to clarify this effect is
scarce. The Experience Sampling Method (ESM) would be effective for studying
depression, R/S and suicidality at both a within-subject and between-subject
level, but such research has never been performed before.
Study objective
To (1) evaluate the adequacy of ESM-variables and -method in measuring
depression, R/S and suicidality, (2) gain insight into the variability and
interrelations of depression, R/S and suicidality, and validate ESM-parameters
on R/S, (3) raise hypotheses and a model for further more detailed research and
(4) ultimately inspire new opportunities for interventions and treatment.
Study design
An observational longitudinal study using ESM consisting of a user co-creation
phase and an exploratory study. This study will be followed by a main study on
the same variables.
Study burden and risks
This study is only an observational study. The risk of a raise in suicidality
by this assessment is very low, a decrease of suicidality is even more
probable. Suicidality is monitored both by the health care provider(s) and
(assistant-)researcher. A crisis-plan is available. A subject can withdraw from
the study at any moment.
