Background summary
Little is known regarding the prevalence of mental disability among patients
with personality disorders. However, patients with mental disability might not
be able to benefit from psychotherapy for personality disorders due to their
LVB. Furthermore, if it is known that a patient has a mental disability,
treatment for personality disorders can be adjusted.
Study objective
To explore the prevalence of mental disability in patients with personality
disorders
To explore the predictive value of the SCIL for mental disability in this
population
To explore the predictive value of the adaptive functioning in patients with
personality disorders with and without mental disability.
Study design
Observational study
Study burden and risks
Participation means one interview of 30 minutes and if an increased risk for
mental disability is found, cognitive tasks will take place during 90 till 120
minutes.
It can be difficult for the patient to answer the questions or conduct the
tasks. Furthermore, it can be confronting if the patient is diagnosed with a
mental disability. However, knowledge that a patient has a mental disability
has the advantage that the treatment for personality disorders can be adjusted
to the patient. Furthermore, a patient might better function if he/she is
aware of his/her impairments in daily life, and seek help if necessary.
