The objective of the stutdy is to 1) identify whether ECAs can persuade community-dwelling older adults to dietary behaviour change and decrease loneliness, 2) test these pathways to effects, and 3) understand use of an ECA.

Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The main study parameters are based on the conceptual models, and include
actual use (operationalized via logfiles), loneliness, and eating behavior.
Secondary outcome
The secondary parameters are based on the conceptual models, and include
enjoyment (pleasure in using the application), aesthetics (the design of the
application in terms of e.g. *duidelijk* and *prettig*), privacy concerns
(about sharing personal data, e.g. name and date of birth), control (control
over the system, as perceived by the user), usability (whether PACO is easy to
use), perceived usefulness (e.g., in terms of *nuttig* and *geschikt*),
relationship with ECA (e.g., in terms of *betrouwbaar*, *menselijk* and
*sympathiek*), Quality of Life (QoL), and the self-determination constructs
(autonomy, competence, relatedness).
Background summary
The prevalence of diet-related noncommunicable diseases among Dutch
community-dwelling older adults is increasing. Embodied Conversational Agents
(ECAs), could be a highly effective medium to address relevant factors
influencing eating behaviours in a user-friendly manner. As compliance to
health advice is important for positive health outcomes, successful design of
persuasive ECAs can have huge health benefits. However, insights in how to
design such agents for the eHealth context are non-existent.
Study objective
The objective of the stutdy is to 1) identify whether ECAs can persuade
community-dwelling older adults to dietary behaviour change and decrease
loneliness, 2) test these pathways to effects, and 3) understand use of an ECA.
Study design
A randomized staggered-entry waitlist-controlled trial will be carried out.
Intervention
The application PACO has been created for (and with) older adults with the goal
to motivate them to increase their eating behavior and decrease their feelings
of loneliness.
Study burden and risks
Subjects are not exposed to any risks, nor have they any costs. They do have to
invest time: fill in questionnaires, visit two meetings and use the
application. The duration and data collection moments are needed to gain a
fine-grained understanding of the use, relationship development and health
change process, and to omit the *black box*. For subjects, the main benefit is
to gain insight in their health behavior via the PACO-application. Although
this might be experienced as confronting by some. The technology was developed
based on sound theories, with input from the target group, so we expect
positive experiences and an improvement in their loneliness and eating
behavior. However, this can only be proven after the study.
