Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Ethnographic data/descriptions on patients* experiences of in- and exclusion,
patterns of sociocultural identification and their
pathways to recovery (harm and healing) in a clinical context, on which
quantitative hypotheses for a follow up research can be
based.
Secondary outcome

Background summary
This research will investigate the dynamics in the relationship between
experienced discrimination/in&exclusion, cultural identity and
psychosis in tbs foreigners. Through ethnographic description and case
comparison of lived experiences of patients with wide-ranging
cultural backgrounds in a forensic psychiatric clinic in the North-East of the
Netherlands, it will offer insights into the social (re)
construction of patients' identities and their individual pathways to recovery.
Study objective
Discovering meaning and patterns in the relationship between experienced
discrimination, cultural identity and psychosis in ethnic
minorities by centering patients* experiences of in- and exclusion in a
particular clinical context.
Secondary objectives are:
-Uncovering patterns of sociocultural identification and their role in pathways
to recovery of transcultural psychiatrie
patients with psychosis
-Exploring the role of social interactions in a particular health care setting
in its treatment outcomes by looking at its influence on
those patterns of identification
Study design
This study has a qualitative design based on ethnographic methods (hospital
ethnography) with a longitudinal approach and a case-study approach.
Study burden and risks
Possible burden and risks are of a psychosocial nature. Since the participants
are forensic psychiatrie in-ward patients, participating
in interviews or being observed might trigger suspicion, arousal or mild
fatigue. An empathie and transparant approach, a focus on expectation
management, a clear consent procedure, close monitoring of patients moods and
consistantly adverting an opt-out will be used to minimize this risk.
