Primary outcome
PGE-MUM in a 24 hr urine sample
Secondary outcome
PGE-MUM in every urinairy sample during a day (spot urine)
Background summary
Prostagladines are active metabolites of arachidonic acid and involved in all
kinds of inflammatory processes. Enhanced concentrations of Prostaglandin E2
are found in the mucose of the gut in patienten with inflammatory bowel
diseases (IBD) compared to healthy volunteers. Prostaglandin E2 is release in
de circulation, metabolized and excreted in the urine. The Prostaglandin E
Major Urinary Metabolite (PGE-MUM) is stable urine and some literature
describes that the concentration of PGE-MUM in urine is correlated with the
disease acitivity in IBD
Study objective
The objective is to investigate the relation between the concentration of
PGE-MUM in urine and disease activity in patients with colitis ulcerosa.
PGE-MUM is analyses in urinary 24 hr collection sample and a sample of each
urinary portion urinated during one day.
Also patientfriendliness of the collection material will be evaluated by a
questionnaire
Study design
One hunderd and seventy patients will be asked to participate. They will all
have a ileocoloscopie and calprotectine (as regular marker of disease activity)
in feces will be measured. They will be asked to collect a 24 hr urinesample
and the day after a urinairy portion of during every urination. Patients will
be asked to fill in a questionnaire.
Study burden and risks
Patients will be asked to collect several urinairy samples during two days.
They are also asked to fill in a questionnaire. These activities have no risk
for the patients involved in this study.
