Background summary
Inflammation plays an important role in disease; it protects us from
infections, but it is also associated with other non-communicable diseases.
Both host and environmental factors can influence these processes, yet much
remains unknown. It is therefore important to further investigate inflammation
and associated factors and pathways.

Exclusion criteria
- Active infection or illness in the past 14 days;
- Any vaccination in the past 4 weeks;
- Immunosuppressive status;
- Known infection with HIV or hepatitis B, or active risk for HIV or hepatitis
B;
- Recent operation, blood transfusion, or endoscopic procedure (< 6 months).
