Background summary
There is an increased relative risk for osteoarthritis of the hip among
professional soccer players, there is a relation between femoroacetabular
impingement and sports and there is a relation between osteoarthritis of the
hip and femoroacetabular impingement. The hypothesis states that cam
impingement develops among boys during the adolescence due to an intensive
soccer career which might lead to early osteoarthritis.
Study objective
We want to investigate the hip joints of young very active male soccer players
to gain greater knowledge on the development of cam impingement, concerning the
shape deformities, the age of onset and the occurrence of cartilage lesions.
Study design
Longitudinal follow-up study
Study burden and risks
In contrast to the previous baseline study and follow-up moments we will obtain
MRI scans at the current follow-up instead of radiographs. Therefore, there are
no risks involved for the participants.
