Background summary
This project contributes to breaking the silence surrounding chronic illness.
It specifically focuses on chronic pain in adolescents and young adults aged
16-25 as a case study. Many young people with chronic pain struggle to make
themselves understood by others, for the following reasons: 1) Chronic pain
often involves an unclear etiology. 2) Various chronic conditions seem to fit
in *normal aging* processes, and therefore conditions such as chronic pain are
habitually associated with older people. Young people with chronic pain
therefore often struggle to be taken seriously. 3) A chronic condition such as
chronic pain typically does not develop progressively over time, which makes it
very difficult to tell a *good story* about it. Chronic conditions seem to trap
patients in a seemingly endless, timeless enduring, which people without a
chronic illness often find hard to understand and relate to.
Study objective
This empirical-philosophical project aims to provide new ways of making sense
of the chronicity or timelessness of chronic pain of young people aged 16-25.
By combining philosophical reflection with qualitative research, it will
decipher 1) how chronically ill people experience time and 2) how this time
experience can be recounted in a narrative. This study aims to both deepen our
understanding of chronic illness experiences and to contribute to better
healthcare.
Study design
The project will address the research question by combining philosophical
analysis with qualitative research. The qualitative research will include 1) an
interview study with young people (aged 16-25) with chronic pain focusing on
their lived experiences of chronicity, and 2) a narrative assignment, in which
the participants will be asked to narrate their experiences for about two weeks
in a medium of their own choosing.
Study burden and risks
Individual interviews require a considerable investment of time (30 minutes to
1,5 hours per session) and mental focus on the part of the respondent.
Secondly, the interview situation can be physically exhausting for respondents
who have trouble sitting down for protracted periods of time. Thirdly,
respondents may find it burdensome to talk about their personal issues
regarding their pain experiences. Participants might even be prompted to relive
distressful past events.
