Background summary
Many common diseases, such as cardiovascular and psychiatric diseases, (partially) originate in early life, in the preconception phase, in pregnancy or in (early) childhood.
Study objective
Generation R Next aims to examine the influence of preconception and pregnancy factors on growth, development and health of children from the earliest phase of life into young adulthood. The study aims to contribute to the development of strategies for optimising health and health care for people wanting to conceive, (future) parents and their children.
Study design
Generation R Next is a multidisciplinary, observational, prospective, population-based cohort study in the city of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Between 2017 and 2022, 3604 women and their partners who wanted to conceive or were expecting a child were included into Generation R Next. These participants and, if applicable, their children are being followed-up prospectively since then. In the first phase of the study, “Preconception, pregnancy and early childhood”, the children were followed until the age of 4.5 years. In early 2025, Phase 2 will continue to follow the children and their parents. In this phase, we are expecting to prospectively follow a total of around 2000 children and their parents in 2 follow-up rounds, around the ages of 6 and 10 years.

Study burden and risks
Generation R Next is a non-therapeutic, observational, medical-scientific study. Generation R Next focuses on growth, development and health of children and their parents, from preconception into adulthood. For that reason, the study cannot be done in another group (for example adults only). The Generation R Next Study includes multiple measurements in the participants, which have been classified to carry a “negligible” risk.
