Thematic Analyses of focus group interviews
Achtergrond van het onderzoek
Current literature shows a significant lack of research on Unassisted Childbirth (UC) in general and on UC in the Netherlands in particular, giving justification for conducting the proposed study. This research proposal aims at undertaking a qualitative study with a phenomenological study design about UC in the Netherlands.
A combination of convenience and purposive sampling is suggested for conducting focus group interviews about the perceptions and beliefs of women in the Netherlands who choose UC. After saturation has been reached, the data will be analysed using thematic analysis. Publication of the findings is intended to contribute to the understanding of this phenomenon and to identify any possible deficiencies of the current Dutch maternity care system in relation to the needs of the target population.
Doel van het onderzoek
What are the motivations of women in the Netherlands to choose UC and what are their beliefs on childbirth in general and in relation to current Dutch maternity care?
This study primarily aims at understanding women’s motivations in declining (parts of) maternity care in the Netherlands, specifically birth care. There has not yet been any research published regarding the prevalence of UC in the Netherlands or the reasons why women decide to freebirth here. In critiquing the literature, there seems to be a significant deficiency in information about UC in general, and relating to the perceptions of freebirthers and maternity care in the Netherlands in particular, thereby justifying the proposed study.
