Primaire uitkomstmaten
The relation between transcutaneous blood gas levels and neonatal sepsis.
Achtergrond van het onderzoek
Neonatal sepsis is one of the major causes of death in premature neonates. Research has shown that the microcirculation could potentially be an indicator of sepsis, even in an early phase. During sepsis the microcirculation gets shunted from the arterioles to the venules, leaving the microcirculation hypoxemic and hypercarbic. These deviating oxygen and carbon dioxide levels during sepsis could potentially be measured with transcutaneous blood gas monitoring.
Doel van het onderzoek
Transcutaneous blood gas measurements can be used to detect neonatal sepsis.
Onderzoeksopzet
In this study, a standard of care heated transcutaneous sensor and an unheated transcutaneous sensor, are used to perform continuous measurements for 2 weeks. If sepsis occurs within these
2 weeks without recovery during these 2 weeks, the measurement is prolonged until clinical recovery has occurred as indicated by the cessation of antibiotic treatment for sepsis.
