Elderly ICU patients have a lower phase angle due to physiological changes in water-electrolytes balance and reduced caloric intake. We expect to find an association between a low phase angle, ICU length of stay and clinical outcome.

Achtergrond van het onderzoek
Rationale: An increasing percentage of patients admitted to the ICU is of elderly age. Aging is associated with physiological of psychosocial changes which increase the risk of malnutrition. Bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) and calculation of phase angle (PA) is an simple non-invasive way to measure body composition and considered a useful marker for nutritional status of ICU-patients.
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate whether phase angle is an independent predictor of clinical outcome in elderly ICU patients. Early detection of malnutrition in elderly could contribute to the dialogue whether an individual patient is fit for ICU treatment.
Study design: Observational retrospective single centre cohort study
Population: Patients aged 80 years or older admitted to the ICU
Primary outcome: ICU/hospital length of stay and ICU/hospital mortality
Doel van het onderzoek
Elderly ICU patients have a lower phase angle due to physiological changes in water-electrolytes balance and reduced caloric intake. We expect to find an association between a low phase angle, ICU length of stay and clinical outcome.
Onderzoeksopzet
- Clinical parameters and blood samples taken on ICU-admission
- Serum phosphate during first 3 days of ICU stay
- ICU discharge
- Hospital discharge
Onderzoeksproduct en/of interventie
Observational study, all clinical parameters and blood samples are collected according to the standard protocol. Based on study findings no extra interventions will be done.
