The patients are or are not able to perform CIC within two weeks after TWOC
Achtergrond van het onderzoek
Acute Urinary Retention (AUR) is a common problem within the field of urology. In 2018 the Noordwest Ziekenhuisgroep made a change in the management of AUR, because a review of practice identified that is took too long for patients before a Trial WithOut Catheter (TWOC) was undertaken in the outpatients unit at Noordwest Ziekenhuisgroep, after the GP had inserted a Transurethral Urinary Catheter (TUC). Motivated by a vision of safe care and better ways to deliver quality, the decision was made to transform this service.
The new plan:1st week- the GP refers the patient to the Urology outpatient clinic within one week after the catheter insertion; the patient receives an appointment for a TWOC at the hospital Nurse Led clinic.
1st-2nd week- the Continence Nurse (CN) undertakes a TWOC and teaches Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC) if necessary
3rd week- Urology follow-up-appointment with the Urologist for diagnosis and development of an individual treatment plan.
This new service seems to have a positive effect on health and QoL. However, not all patients prove to be able to perform CIC, which can lead to extra visits to GP or hospital.
This trial aimes to identify patient characteristics which can lead to predictors of succes for technique learning.
