Participation, frequency and versatility in criminal acts, is assessed by the ‘Self-report Delinquency Scale’ (Van der Laan & Blom, 2006).
Recidivism will be assessed with data of the Research and Policy Database for Judicial Documentation. This database provides information about the number of arrests, type and severity of offence of adolescent’s reoffending.
Achtergrond van het onderzoek
The effects of the prevention program ‘New Perspectives’ (Nieuwe Perspectieven, NP) in Amsterdam, are investigated, using a randomized controlled trial (RCT).
Within this study, we will be able to gain more insight in the effects of NP in preventing persistent criminal behavior and reoffending. In addition, the study will provide more information about improvements in other life areas, such as in the school and work situation and relations of youngsters with their parents and peers. Second, moderators will be investigated in order to examine the effectiveness of NP for divers target groups (young and older juveniles, boys and girls, different ethnic backgrounds). Finally, we will examine the contribution of non-specific treatment characteristics (therapeutic alliance) to the intervention effects.
Onderzoeksopzet
All data (questionnaires) will be collected at four points in time: prior to treatment (T1 baseline assessment), after 3 months (T2 after the intensive intervention phase), immediately after treatment (T3 post-test assessment: 6 months after T1, after the aftercare phase), and 1 year after treatment (T4 follow-up: 12 months after T3).
Onderzoeksproduct en/of interventie
The experimental condition is the intervention Nieuwe Perspectieven (New Perspectives), an intensive, short-term and community-based program targeting youth at risk for (persistent) juvenile delinquency. The NP-program consists of an intensive coaching phase of 3 months followed by a 3-month aftercare phase. The total duration of the program is 12 weeks.
The control condition consists of care as usual (CAU), other existing standard services of youth care in Amsterdam.

- experiencing problems on multiple life domains (school, family, peers, leisure time)
- at risk for persistent delinquent behavior

- IQ below 70
- severe psychiatric problems
- severe drugs- or alcohol use (dependency)
