Achtergrond van het onderzoek
People with intellectual disabilities are ageing and the number of people with dementia in this group increases faster than in the general population. No evidence-based methods for people with intellectual disabilities are known to handle behavioural changes associated with dementia. This study examines the feasibility of Dementia Care Mapping (DCM) in the care of older people with intellectual disabilities and dementia. DCM is an intensive observation method to map personal experiences, needs and wellbeing of people with dementia. DCM is as well a process which creates a continuous improvement of the quality of care. If feasible, this part of the study is followed by an effect study, focused on quality of life of older people with intellectual disabilities and dementia and on job satisfaction of healthcare professionals. This study aims at the questions:
What is the effect of Dementia Care Mapping in the care for elderly people with intellectual disability and dementia, on job satisfaction and skills of ID-care staff and on quality of life op elderly people with ID.
