Achtergrond van het onderzoek

The project is aimed at strengthening family ties in order 1) to reduce the negative influence of paternal imprisonment on problem behaviour of children of prisoners, 2) to tackle patterns of intergenerational transmission of criminal behaviour, 3) to disrupt criminogenic family situations and 4) to reduce recidivism rates of prisoners after release.

1
Onderzoeksproduct en/of interventie
The family approach consists of three elements:
1) child friendly prison visitation facilities and enhanced possibilities for parent-child contact (such as video calls)
2) an extensive support system by social workers (prisoners follow a specialized day program which includes parenting classes, and after release the participants have access to a re-integration support)
3) the placement of participants on a cell block which only houses fathers who participate in the family approach (the fathers’ wing)
