Achtergrond van het onderzoek
The population is aging and in the next decades the number of older people will increase considerably. Because age is a major risk factor for dementia, the number of people with dementia will increase. To slow down the progressive cognitive decline in people with dementia physical activity has proven to be beneficial. Physical activity can improve physical function, mood, and activity exerts a positive influence on a disturbed rest-activity rhythm, which is often seen in people with dementia. In this study, older people with dementia will walk 30 minutes a day, for 5 or 3 days a week as part of daily care in respectively nursing homes and day care for elderly.
