Work participation in patients with osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most prevalent joint disorders of the world and is a public health problem. Although OA prevalence is highest in elderly, a trend has occurred towards the working age group. However not much is known about the influence of OA on work participation. In addition also not much is known about the work participation of people after total hip or knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA) due to OA. For that the purpose of this observational study is to explore the influence of OA and consequently THA/TKA on workparticipation in Dutch patients suffering form end stage OA, between the age of eighteen and sixty-three years, and having a paid job.

Methods of measurement:

1. Questionnaire;

2. Socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender, educational level, marital status, comorbidity and Body Mass Index (BMI);

3. Number of working hours;

4. Work ability by means of a single item of the Work Ability Index (WAI);

5. Functional limitations by means of the Dutch version of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities osteoarthritis index (WOMAC);

6. Physical activity by means of the Short Questionnaire to Assess Health-enhancing physical activity (SQUASH);

7. Vitality by means of a subscale of the Short Form-36 (SF-36);

8. Depression by means of the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9);

9. Work characteristics and work accommodations.
