Early Language Screening - the Netherlands (ELS-NL)

Speech and language problems are one of the most reported developmental problems in children. Identification of children at risk for speech and language problems may lead to appropriate follow-up and interventions at a young age, when chances for improvement are best. In the last decade various instruments are developed to detect speech and language problems in young children (NCJ guideline for Child Health Care, Siméa Guideline for primary schools). However, none of these instruments has proved satisfying psychometric properties and the effectiveness of the screening methods are unknown. The aim of this study is to develop a standardized and validated uniform screening instrument for speech and language delays in children from 1 to 6 years of age (ELS-NL).

Part 1: Child is 1;0-5;11 years of age: parental questionnaire on language development of their child, questions on backgroud variables, question on willingness to participate in follow-up.



Part 2: If child is selected for follow-up:

The following tests will be used:

- Lexilijst NL (1;0-1;11 years of age)

- Lexilijst Begrip (1;0-1;11 years of age)

- Schlichting test voor taalbegrip (2;0-5;11)

- Schlichting test voor woordontwikkeling (2;0-5;11)

- Schlichting test voor zinsontwikkeling (2;0-5;11)

- Taalstandaard (1,06-3;11)

- CCC2-NL (4;0-5;11)

Part 1: Parental questionnaire (ELS-NL and background variables) during a 15-20 minutes phonecall.

Part 2: a follow up for a random selection (25%) to assess the childs language abilities with standardized language tests alongside the ELS-NL during a 2 hour home visit.
