Achtergrond van het onderzoek
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by dyspnea, a lower quality of walking ability and more balance disturbances. Until now, gait patterns of COPD patients have only been investigated by accelerometers. Only few differences in gait patterns have been found, for example higher walking variability (medio-lateral displacement) and lower cadence. With a new device, the GRAIL, gait patterns can be assessed more extensively.

Belangrijkste voorwaarden om deel te mogen nemen (Inclusiecriteria)
Patients:
COPD, aged between 40-85 years, referral for assessment in CIRO+, clinically stable
Controls:
aged between 20-85 years
Belangrijkste redenen om niet deel te kunnen nemen (Exclusiecriteria)
Neuromuscular co-morbidities, subjects who are unable to walk without walking aids, subjects with open wound, medical history of asthma, lung cancer, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, lung fibrosis, or any other significant respiratory disease; having undergone lung surgery, or history of orthopaedic ailments which could affect the walking pattern.
Controls: any significant respiratory disease or chronic heart failure.
