Pediatric kidney transplantation: an overview of 300 recipients in 10 European centers

Pediatric kidney transplantations are a rarity; in the Netherlands only 30 transplantations are performed each year. The incidence of end-stage renal disease receiving renal replacement therapy in Europe is 5.5 cases per million age-related population (pmarp) in patients aged 0-14 years and varies markedly between countries (interquartile range 3.4-7.0 pmarp)
Although there are different registries that collect data on pediatric kidney patients, most registries focus on their own specialism. Pediatric kidney transplantation requires collaboration of multiple disciplines including nephrology, urology, vascular surgery and anaesthesia. To enable analysis of clinical outcome, data on all these disciplines are needed in order to improve multidisciplinary care.
In order to analyse coherency of current care between European centers, an overview of clinical care is needed among HCP’s performing pediatric kidney transplantation. Such a registry allows comparison of clinical management among expert centres. Best practice methodology could be replicated in different countries which will raise the quality of care

There is little coherence in clinical care among different european centers. These differences in care do cause differences in outcome.
