Achtergrond van het onderzoek
Background: The human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a virus that belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family and has been known since 2001. The symptoms may include wheezing, increased breathing pressure and a severe cough. The course is usually mild and often requires no medical intervention in healthy adults. However, the image can also develop into pneumonia in the elderly, immune compromised and it can cause exacerbations in COPD. Little is currently known about the clinical course of patients with HMPV infection who have underlying chronic lung disease.
Objective: Through this study we want to give a better description of an infection with the human Metapneumovirus and the course of both healthy people and people with underlying chronic lung disease.
Method: This retrospective cohort analysis will look at the clinical outcomes of patients with HMPV infection, with a group of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a healthy group of patients. The clinical outcomes that are observed are: the mortality and the duration of the hospital stay. The patients are adults (> 18 years) and have visited the emergency room in Heerlen or are known to the pulmonologist about their infection, with the PCR from a nasopharyngeal swab being positive for the HMPV.
