Achtergrond van het onderzoek
Surgical adverse events constitute a large proportion of iatrogenic illness. Because the entire surgical pathway is prone to error, interventions aiming to improve surgical patient safety should not focus on the operating room alone. In the Academic Medical Centre, the SURgical PAtient Safety System (SURPASS) checklist was developed, a multidisciplinary checklist covering the entire surgical pathway from admission to discharge.
In this study, the effect of the SURPASS checklist on patient outcomes is studied in a multicentre setting.The checklist is implemented in six hospitals. A baseline measurement of three months is compared to a three-month period after the implementation of the checklist.
