The dependent variable is the performance on a task that measures goal directed arm movements (before and after the magnifier training). Both time and accurracy will be analyzed. The goal directed movements are registered with a wacom tablet, that measures x,y-coordinates over time.
Achtergrond van het onderzoek
The study investigates the use of low vision aids in children with a visual impairment, especially the influence of motor aspects. First, the study investigates the development of motor skills (goal directed arm movements) in children with a visual impairment compared to normally sighted peers. Second, the study investigates the influence of motor skill performance on the ability to use a magnifier. Finally, effect of a magnifier training on the performance of goal directed movements wil be measured.
Doel van het onderzoek
The first aim of this study is to evaluate the development of motor skills (goal directed arm movements) in children with a visual impairment compared to normally sighted peers. Our hypothesis is that children with a visual impairment have poorer motor skills compared to their normally sighted peers. The second aim of the study is to evaluate the influence of motor skill performance on the ability to use a magnifier. Our hypothesis is that poorer motor skills limit the ability of magnifier use.
Onderzoeksopzet
Measuring points:
1. May 2010-july 2010: Collecting data normally sighted children;
2. September 2010-okt 2010: Collecting data (pre-measures) children with a visual impairment;
3. Okt-nov 2010: Intervention takes place;
4. Nov-jan 2010: Collecting post measures.
Onderzoeksproduct en/of interventie
The study investigates the effect of an evidence based magnifier training on the performance of goals directed arm movements in visually impaired children. In november and december 2010 the visually impaired children will receive an intervention. This intervention takes place over 6 weeks. Children will be visited at home by a trainer. During 6 weeks, 12 half hour sessions will take place.
